Oscar-Winning Director Attacked by Israeli Settlers and Arrested

Hamdan Ballal

Palestinian director Hamdan Ballal, known for his Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, faced a violent attack. A group of masked Israeli settlers targeted his home in Susya, located in the Masafer Yatta region south of Hebron.

According to five Jewish American activists, about 15 armed settlers surrounded and attacked Ballal. They threw stones at Palestinians and destroyed a water tank near his house.

“They smashed his car windows, slashed a tire, and caused extensive damage,” said Raviv, an activist from the Center for Jewish Nonviolence.

Escalation of Violence

The situation worsened when a group of soldiers arrived alongside settlers in military uniforms. The settlers chased Ballal to his home. Witnesses reported that he was beaten and injured by the settlers.

Activists who filmed the scene found bloodstains inside Ballal’s house. A family member said the blood was from injuries sustained when he was hit on the head.

Ballal, along with another man identified only as Nasser, was arrested by the Israeli army. The reason for their arrest remains unclear.

Military’s Statement and Witness Testimonies

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) issued a statement. They claimed there was a violent confrontation between Palestinians and Israelis. They alleged that “terrorists” threw rocks at Israeli citizens.

The IDF said forces dispersed the confrontation and arrested three Palestinians suspected of throwing rocks, as well as an Israeli civilian involved in the violence.

However, activists at the scene contradicted this narrative. They described settlers as the primary aggressors, targeting both Palestinians and Jewish activists.

International Recognition and Backlash

Fellow director Basel Adra suggested the attack could be linked to the growing success of No Other Land. The film has gained international acclaim, starting with its premiere at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival.

The documentary, a collaboration between Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers, sheds light on the destruction of Masafer Yatta by the Israeli military. It follows Adra as he risks arrest and violence to document the loss of his hometown.

Despite its accolades, the film has sparked controversy. In Miami Beach, officials briefly considered ending the lease of a theater that screened it.

Settlers Attack Jewish Activists

The settlers also attacked Jewish activists at the scene. They hurled stones and used sticks to assault them. Activists reported smashed car windows and slashed tires.

Yuval Abraham, another co-director of No Other Land, shared the news on social media. “Settlers lynched Hamdan Ballal,” he posted. “He has injuries to his head and stomach. He is bleeding.”

Ongoing Investigation

The Israeli military is reportedly investigating the incident. However, they have not provided further comments on the episode.

This violent confrontation highlights the rising tensions in the West Bank. It also underscores the challenges faced by those documenting life under occupation. As Ballal recovers, the global community waits for justice and accountability. Stay updated with the latest buzz from the world of entertainment only on News Trendzs.
