End of an Era in Bollywood

Mumbai, Mar 14 – A veteran actor and director, Deb Mukherjee, who was a well-known figure in India’s entertainment film world, passed away at the age of 83 due to a long illness. He died on Friday morning at his suburban Mumbai home.

Mukherjee was a well-known personality in the fraternity of the cinema world and an enthusiastic participant in the North Bombay Durga Puja celebration. Declaring his death, his representatives issued a statement detailing profound sadness on the news of the passing of the veteran actor.

His last rites were conducted at Pawan Hans Crematorium, Juhu, Mumbai, with some Bollywood stars and industry people coming to offer their final respects.

A Remarkable Career in Indian Cinema

Deb Mukherjee made a strong impact in Bollywood during the 1960s and 1970s, appearing in several well-known films, including:

Having come from the illustrious Samarth-Mukherjee clan, Mukherjee had ties with Bollywood much earlier. His mother Satidevi was sister to veteran cinema personalities Ashok Kumar, Anup Kumar, and Kishore Kumar. Two of his brothers included Joy Mukherjee, who was a noted actor as well as director, and Shomu Mukherjee, a director wedded to actress Tanuja, making Deb Mukherjee uncle to Bollywood actresses Kajol and Rani Mukerji.

Family and Personal Life

Mukherjee had been married twice. Sunita, his first wife’s daughter, is married to renowned director Ashutosh Gowariker. His second wife’s son, Ayan Mukerji, is one of Bollywood’s finest directors today, having treated us to Wake Up Sid, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and Brahmāstra.
