University of Hyderabad students detained in Kancha protest

hyderabad university protest

Several students from the University of Hyderabad protested on Sunday against the Telangana government’s plan to auction 400 acres of Kancha Gachibowli land. The government wants to develop IT parks and infrastructure in the area. However, students argue that this would harm the local biodiversity.

Heavy Police Deployment and Detentions

As many as eight earthmovers arrived at the site, accompanied by a large police force. Students rushed to the location, shouting slogans against the government. Some climbed onto the machines, demanding a halt to the land clearing.

Cyberabad police detained 53 students for allegedly obstructing officials. Commissioner Avinash Mohanty stated that some students also assaulted police personnel. Authorities are considering legal action against them.

Students Condemn Police Action

The University of Hyderabad Students’ Union (UoHSU) strongly condemned the detentions. According to the union, they organized a peaceful rally after hearing about the land clearing. They claim the police used force unnecessarily.

A female protester accused the police of inappropriate behavior. She stated, “We only wanted to ask why they are clearing the land, but they detained us forcefully.”

Government’s Response

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy dismissed the protests. Speaking in the Assembly, he alleged that the Opposition was inciting students to stall the project. He remarked, “There are no tigers or deer in the area, but some cunning ‘foxes’ are trying to obstruct development.”

Dispute Over Land Ownership

The University administration clarified that the land does not belong to the institution. However, students insist that the area is ecologically significant. They fear the loss of green cover and wildlife due to urban development.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement about the auction. Meanwhile, tensions remain high as students continue to demand the preservation of Kancha Gachibowli. Get the latest market insights, latest news, and technology updates — visit News Trendzs today!
